Premium vs. Regular Gas

Gas pumps in a row

Every Visalia driver already knows that gas stations offer different types of fuel, but what’s the difference between premium and regular gas? The answer to that question is far less well-known, but the team here at Western Motors Fresno is always happy to help provide all the information you need. You can always stop by our service center for further information, but feel free to read on for a quick premium vs. regular gas overview.

How Do You Compare Premium and Regular Gas?

Before getting into the differences between premium and regular, it’s a good idea to understand the factors at play. These include:

  • Octane Rating: Octane ratings indicate the chance of engine knocking, which can cause damage. The higher the octane level, the lower your risk.
  • Engine: Regular gas burns faster than premium, so it’s often recommended for engines with low compression ratios. For an engine with a high compression ratio, premium gas tends to be recommended.
  • Price: As you might have guessed, premium gas will be more expensive than regular – you’re usually looking at 20 to 40 cents more per gallon.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

Regular unleaded gasoline is the most commonly used type of gas and will be the default choice for most Clovis drivers. It has a lower octane rating, but it does help keep costs down.

Premium gas is still produced from crude oil, but it will have gone through further refining. It will have an octane level that is 90 or above, and it will burn much cleaner to create less pollution.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: Which Should You Use?

Ready to decide which gas to use for your trips across Madera and beyond? Here are just a few things to keep in mind:

  • Using premium in a vehicle that doesn’t require it will not mean boosting performance.
  • If you hear engine knocking when you use regular unleaded, it’s worth speaking to a service professional about upgrading to premium.
  • If your vehicle utilizes a turbocharger, premium gas may be required.
