For this guide, we’ve used data from RepairPal, the leading agency rating vehicle maintenance costs and reliability. In their review of the Toyota RAV4, RepairPal noted that it has “excellent ownership costs” while the “severity and frequency of repairs are both much lower than other vehicles,” making the Toyota RAV4 “one of the more reliable vehicles on the road.”
RepairPal uses three criteria to rate vehicle reliability: annual maintenance costs, frequency of unscheduled repairs, and the probability that those repairs will be serious or severe. They determined that the RAV4 costs about $429 annually to maintain, compared to an average of $652 for all vehicles. The rate that Toyota owners have to come in for unscheduled repairs is 0.3 times per year, compared to an average of 0.4 times per year for the average driver. And the probability of those repairs being severe is just 10%, compared to 12% for other vehicles.
